Board of Directors

The Burlington Symphony Orchestra [formerly Symphony on the Bay] is operated by the Greater Hamilton Symphony Association, a registered Canadian charity. The volunteer Board of Directors meets nine times a year and is comprised of a good cross-section of professionals from the business, education, and social services sectors, as well as musicians from the orchestra and community.

Anda Protopopescu – President

Anda Protopopescu is an accomplished business professional with 30 years of experience working with Fortune 500 organizations in Financial Services, Consulting, High Tech and Telecommunications.  She’s held senior management and executive positions in various disciplines including Finance, Marketing, Operations and Project Management. Anda has a Master of Business Administration with a Marketing Major and an Honors Bachelor of Commerce with a Finance Major from McMaster University, and is a Project Management Professional with the Project Management Institute.  Anda’s love for the arts started at a young age through her education in Eastern Europe where she grew up prior to moving to the Hamilton/Burlington area where she currently resides with her husband and their two sons.


Gerry Callaghan

Gerry Callaghan – Past President

Gerry Callaghan has more than 25 years experience in the financial services industry and Contact Centre Management. She has an Honours BA in History and French Language with a minor in Spanish Language from McMaster University.

Blessed to come from a family that always found a few extra dollars to expose their children to theater and music, she had an early start to appreciating what groups like the Burlington Symphony Orchestra offer our community. In pursuit of her education she was further exposed to the arts in Northern Quebec with two summers at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi where she learned about French Canadian folklore and and improvisation.

During a year of studying in France and half a year in Spain Gerry got the opportunity to stage manage school productions, participate in improvisation groups and seek out amazing local music experiences including a chamber group in a 17th century French church.

Arthur Greenblatt

Arthur Greenblatt

Arthur Greenblatt – Vice President

Arthur Greenblatt is the retired Executive Director of the Dundas Valley School of Art where he served from 2000 to 2014.

Prior to that appointment, he has been the Dean of the College for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design in Detroit, the President of the Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, Massachusetts, and the President of the Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary, Alberta.

He has degrees from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Towson University, Towson, Maryland and a certificate from Harvard University.

He was a teacher in the Howard County Maryland School System, and a faculty member at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Arthur is an artist listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and has shown at galleries in the US, Canada and Japan. He is included in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Krista Russ – Secretary

Krista Russ is a proud second-generation insurance professional in Canada’s thriving property & casualty insurance market.  She has an Honours BA in Political Science from McMaster University.

Having lived in the Halton Region her whole life, Krista is excited to bring awareness and support the local arts programs that is available for many to enjoy. Coupling her love for the arts and her professional expertise, Krista was motived to get involved with the Burlington Symphony Orchestra as a way to give back to the community.

Jason Boelhouwer

Jason Boelhouwer

Jason Boelhouwer – Director

Jason Boelhouwer has sat on and chaired several local not-for-profit boards and brings over 20 years of brand development, sales, marketing and administrative experience to the Burlington Symphony Orchestra.

Born, raised and continuing to live in Aldershot, Jason has been married for 30 years (and counting) to his high school sweetheart.  Jason likes to dabble in local politics, collect stamps and get involved in volunteer work in an effort to give something back to a community that has given so much to him and his family.

Jason has a BA in finance and politics and currently works at Caroline Place Retirement Residence as the Sales & Marketing Manager.  As have both of his children, Jason was introduced to music at an early age and enjoy listening to a wide variety of music from classical to modern.

Joe Chalklin

Joe Chalklin – Director

Joe Chalklin is retired from a career in architecture, as a project manager and contract administrator for Toronto architectural firms and hospitals. Joe has lived in Burlington for over 35 years and is married with 3 daughters and a grandson. Giving back to the community is important; he is a Rotary member and is active with H2O-4-all (bringing water to developing countries).  He has participated on local boards for various construction projects. As a music lover Joe is pleased to be involved and eager to assist the wonderful people and performers of the Burlington Symphony Orchestra.

Jay Rodrigues

Jay Rodrigues – Director

Jay Rodrigues is a software engineer with ten years of experience working with tech companies and startups from Germany, Canada, and the US. Born in Brazil, he lived for almost a decade in Heidelberg, Germany, where he graduated in Computational Linguistics and German Studies from the University of Heidelberg. In 2014, Jay moved to Canada for a brief internship at a startup in Waterloo but ended up staying. He is a Burlington resident since 2017. Jay is excited about using his IT skills to facilitate the organization’s internal work and to help grow its presence in the community.


Milan Sanander

Milan Sanader – Director

Milan is a retired science teacher, university instructor and long-time member of the BSO bass section.  Milan brings to the BSO several years of experience working on the board of a major educational non-profit organization.   In addition to playing in the orchestra, Milan is actively involved in his church choir and a Serbian folk music band.  When he is not “gigging” Milan enjoys travel and golf.

Milan is honoured to be a member of such a dedicated board of directors and looks forward to using his creative energies to grow the presence of the Burlington Symphony Orchestra in our community.

Marc Tremblay

Marc Tremblay – Director

Marc brings a strong background in business with previous senior management positions in the technology sector both in Canada and abroad. As an Executive, he has gained experience in a number of areas, including strategic planning, human resources, sales & marketing and finance. Marc also has previous experience serving on not-for-profit boards and brings that experience along with a passion for helping the BSO grow both in scope and scale.

 Cynthia Vermeer

Cynthia Vermeer – Director

Cynthia Vermeer resides in Welland, Ontario with her husband Gerry where they share ownership in Vermeer’s Garden Centre and Flower Shop, a generational, family-owned business. Cynthia is actively involved in the daily operations of their business while sharing her life with her children and grandchildren.

Cynthia is a flute and piccolo player who performs with several ensembles throughout the Niagara region while continuing her musical studies with Suzanne Shulman in Hamilton. Cynthia is excited to share her love of music with the Burlington Symphony Orchestra and looks forward to working alongside its members and Board of Directors to grow the orchestra.
